Is your schedule packed with so many activities that it’s hard for you to even breathe, much less enjoy your day-to-day life? In my work here at Sublime Reflection, I run across so many women who feel selfish if they take time for themselves. A lot of us think of self-care as something we should only do when we get everything else done.
Being selfish is thinking only of your needs at the expense of the well-being of someone else or even yourself.
If you’re like most of the women I know, the very last person you take care of is yourself.
Taking care of ourselves takes courage and commitment. But, since our lives are so busy, it’s not always easy for us to make time for ourselves.
Today I’m sharing a few of my favorite self-care ideas with you, but first let’s start out by making sure we are clear on one thing. Self-care is about making your life easier, not harder. Make sure self-care is not just one more thing you feel like you have to do “right” or “perfectly” or even that you have to follow some specific plan. The most amazing thing about self care is that it can be whatever YOU need it to be.
Self-care is simply about remembering that we deserve to take care of ourselves, and when we do, it not only nourishes us, but also allows us to be available for important things and people in our lives.
What exactly is self-care?
The term “self-care” refers to anything we do intentionally to care for our physical, mental and emotional/spiritual health. The key word there is intentionally. You might trip across a self-care practice now and then, but it’s critical to schedule it in your day–it’s that important!
Here are a few of my favorite ways to add bits of self-care throughout my days:
Morning routine – I wrote an entire post about my morning routine, so I won’t repeat that here, but check it out if you want to see what my routine involves. Let’s just say that it gets my day off to a great start. I actually look forward to getting up in the morning!
Healthy snacks – Let’s face it, eating is fun, and it’s perfectly okay to include in your self-care routine. Healthy snacks are an important part of my overall nutrition for the day. I use the time I’m eating a snack as a little self-care break in the middle of the day. I’ll often combine it with one of the other activities above like reading a good book, writing in my journal, or listening to a podcast. It’s a little refresher that goes a long way in helping the rest of my afternoon go smoothly.
Some of my favorite healthy snacks are from Orchard Valley Harvest. They recently released two new wellness mix varieties:
The Antioxidant Mix is a delicious blend of roasted almonds, dried sweetened cranberries and blueberries, roasted cashews and pepitas.
The Omega-3 Mix includes walnuts, dried sweetened cranberries and blueberries, almonds and pistachios.
I love Orchard Valley Harvest snacks because they are non-GMO and have no artificial ingredients, and fit well in my clean eating meal plan. They are super convenient and packaged in the perfect portion size, making them an ideal snack for my afternoon self-care break.

Gratitude Journal – I make time at the end of every day to write down 2-3 things I’m grateful for. These go beyond the usual things like my house, husband, kids, etc. I focus on a few small, specific things that happened in the last 24 hours. This keeps my mind focused on all the blessings in my life and helps me notice them more the next day.
Reading – Since I was a very little girl, I’ve escaped into good books. I like the break it gives me from my own life, and I love learning new things.
Quiet time – My kids think I’m crazy, but I never listen to music in the car. I actually love driving my kids places and having the time alone as I drive back home to think and reflect and just enjoy a few minutes of quiet with no electronic distractions!
Personal Reflection – Every morning and evening, I reflect on specific questions in my bullet journal. This keeps my mindset focused on the positive and helps guide my day.
Exercise – Working out is part of my morning routine, but it’s worth mentioning on it’s own. There are many reasons I exercise, but the main reason is because it makes me happier.
Make your health and happiness a priority. Start by getting enough rest, exercising, eating wholesome food, and adding a little fun and joy to your schedule, and you’ll actually become a better partner, parent, and friend.
As you can see from my list, the possibilities are endless. This is where self-awareness comes in. Only you can know what recharges your battery and it’s your responsibility to build that into your life. Never forget–YOU matter!
